So, what's it all about?
If you could make lots of cash by telling people where to shop would you? No stocking of merchandise, no hassles of accepting credit cards, just pointing people in the right direction to some great products. An easy way to make money. Sounds too good to be true, right? Affiliate Marketing is about just that - pointing people in the right direction. When someone clicks on one of your banners, you're well on the way to being quids in!
So do I need to be a big time marketer?
Nope, you can be a small fry and make money. You start with a web site; you could sell items yourself, or just have an informational site. You can even create your own site just to cater to affiliates. Yes, you can even have one of those freebie sites and promote affiliates. You do not need 10,000 hits a day to make money, or the ability to put up links and banners on your site.
Here's how it works
When a visitor clicks on a banner on an Affiliate's site, a cookie is placed on that person's computer. The cookie lasts for a certain number of days, and during that time period any actions made by the visitor on that computer that satisfy the programme requirements will result in commission or money for the original Affiliate. Or in plain language: visitor clicks on a button or link on your site, gets a cookie, visitor goes to that linked site and shops. Visitor buys, and you make money. It's really that simple.
When does the money start flowing?
Of course things don't happen overnight, at least not generally. However, you will get paid commissions due once you've reached the minimum payment set by the Affiliate Programme. In other words, if you need to reach a pre-set amount like £25 before you get a cheque issued, and you only have £10, then you'll have to wait until you reach the allotted amount. It all depends upon the Affiliate Programme specifics.
