What can I advertise on my site?

You can sign up for bunches of affiliate programmes for your site, but generally it's best to start with things that you're interested in and go with your site or visitor’s themes and ideas. For instance, if you have an animal site that caters to pampered pooches, it might not be such a great idea to advertise affiliate programmes that sell cow prods! It's probably better to put up a site that sells doggy day spa certificates. Of course, there'll be many different types of products and services you can choose from. Select the ones you think will appeal the most to your target audience, as this will generate higher click-throughs therefore higher commission.

How do I put these adverts on my site?

The standard forms of online advertising approved by the Internet Advertising Bureau are .gif and .jpg images; flash, dhtml and text (links). These are easy to cut and paste with the Affiliate link hidden behind the image. Your userid will be embedded in this link and that's how you'll know if you've been "clicked" or not.

What's Deep Linking?

Let's say you have a magazine article that you really like and want to show it to a friend, you might bookmark the page to show it to her so she can go directly to that page rather than leafing through the entire magazine. Simply put, deep linking is putting a link on a page which goes directly to another link or item rather than making the customer spend precious time and frustration rummaging through the entire site to find something of interest.

Deep linking on your own sites is a really good idea, you can use it for all sorts of sites, eg. a shopping site. Many affiliate schemes offer Shopping Channels and Deep Link feeds. If you do go for this method, try to follow three basic guidelines to support your users:

  • Tell users the arrival point. Use links to get back to the beginning, showing them a way out of that page if they want to read more on your site. Something like looking at a book “chapter one, page 14” instead of just slapping them on the page with nowhere to go.
  • Put design elements on every single page: Place Company name or logo in upper left corner; Direct, one-click link to the homepage; Search (preferably in the upper right corner); Orient the user relative to the rest of the website
  • Include links to other resources that are directly relevant to the current location. - On your own site and others if you think it would help. Give the user information at a click not a crawl.

There are plenty of places to read more about deep linking and we encourage you to gain as much knowledge about the subject as you can. The more you learn the less likely it will be you come out on page 36 of Google search listings! Have a go, you'll be surprised how easy it is!
